Questions?

How long does my landlord have to return my deposit?

It depends on your state. California gives landlords 21 days, New York is 14 days, and most other states allow 30 days. Your letter will cite the specific deadline for your state.

What if my landlord ignores the letter?

The letter documents your formal demand and creates a paper trail. Many states allow you to sue for 2-3x the deposit amount if the landlord violates the return deadline. Small claims court is usually the next step.

Is this legal advice?

No. We provide template letters for self-advocacy. The letters cite your state's security deposit laws, but we're not representing you. If you need legal advice, please consult an attorney.
